Todos temos fronteiras, mas nenhum homem é uma ilha.
We all have boundaries, but no man is an island.

John Donne's famous words - "No man is an island" and "never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee" - have acquired the familiarity almost of catch-phrases, but few people know their context or how they came to be written.
When Donne was Dean of St Paul's, in the last years of his life, he fell seriously ill. As he lay in bed he heard, day after day, the bells tolling for funerals, often of people he had known. Believing that he himself was soon to die, the bells made him aware of the interdependence of men and woman in the life of mankind as a whole. Afterwards he wrote a long piece of meditative prose, the Devotions, in which he set down the progression of his thoughts and emotions during his illness.
This beautiful little book, containing selections from that work, expresses through Donne's evocative prose our relationship with our fellow human beings and our place in the great cycle of life and death. In moments of despair it reminds us that, although we must ultimately die, we are important as members of the human race; our very existence makes its own contribution to mankind, and however insignificant and useless we may feel, we matter to each other.

Manuela São Simão
Nasceu em São Paulo, Brasil, em 1980, indo para Portugal com 5 anos onde, em 2002, termina a formação em pintura na Faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto. Com a Bolsa Erasmus faz uma passagem pela National Academy of Art de Sofia na Bulgária, onde a mudança e o confronto com países de leste de territórios e mentalidades bastante fechadas (pré-adesão à União Europeia) inspiram um trabalho visual e conceptual que até hoje aborda as fronteiras físicas e limites territorias e sua relação com as fronteiras psicológicas e "pré-conceitos" - séries: "Boundaries_Espaço-Caixa", "Fronteiras e Enquandramentos", "Boxed Cities", "Invóluvros", "Handle With Love", etc.
Como artista multidisciplinar, além das artes plásticas tem vindo a complementar a sua formação e a apresentar projectos em áreas como o Design, a Ilustração, performance intermedia, arte pública, sound art e curadoria.
Trabalhou e participou em apresentações públicas com os performers: Nádia Lauro, Franz Polstra, Rogério Nuno Costa, Ana Borralho & João Galante, Catherine Bay e Elaine Summers.
Desde 2008 tem apresentado projectos intermedia como "Gibberish" no Festival Silêncio em Lisboa no Goethe Institut, "Transhumance.Porto" no Future Places Festival, "MajHora FM" no Serralves em Festa no Porto e "Gibberish.Porto" no TRAMA Festival de Artes Performativas.
É autora das ilustrações do livro infantil "Conto da Travessa das Musas", escrito por João Pedro Mésseder e publicado em 2010 pela Deriva Editores (Porto) e tem vindo a orientar diversos workshops para crianças em escolas, galerias, Museus, Bibliotecas em Portugal mas também recentemente no Barbican Centre, em Londres, onde mora desde Fevereiro deste ano.
Como curadora já organizou exposições colectivas e projectos sonoros. Está no momento a preparar a segunda edição do projecto [IN BETWEEN] radio pieces a ser apresentado durante o Festival Internacional de Arte Rádio Radia LX 2012, organizado pela Rádio Zero da qual é membro desde 2009.
